Water cooler is one of the cooling equipment for use in hot and dry environments. The equipment that seems very suitable and practical for Iran’s generally hot and dry climate. A little research on its types, its operation method, manufacturing companies, required equipment, the method of providing parts, identifying the quality level of parts and even the cooler itself, etc., so that you can gain knowledge about it. Evaporative cooling is a simple thing that happens inside the air conditioner to cool the interior of your house. The water cooler cools the air along with the evaporation of water. But this evaporation is not the evaporation that most of us have in mind. In fact, in the process of evaporative cooling, the contact surface of water with air flow increases in order. Water in small volumes evaporates as a result of proximity to hot air, and along with that air it cools and also increases the level of humidity. This means that the amount of heat absorbed from the air depends on the amount of evaporated water. So, the more we increase the water circulation level inside the water cooler, the more cooling power we should expect.
This simple ratio does not mean that you are likely to drown your small home water cooler!!! However, water will be effective in evaporative cooling that can be well exposed to proper air flow in a small volume. Water more than the air flow capacity of the cooler will give the opposite result. For such a need, i.e. to achieve more cooling power, there is no solution to increase the dimensions of the water cooler so that a larger evaporation surface can be achieved.
On the other hand, if you think that you can achieve more cooling in a fixed environment by buying a bigger water cooler, it is not an interesting thought. Not every space has the capacity of every cooler. Buying a large water cooler with high cooling power for a small space will bring you nothing but a strong flow of wet wind at home. A wind that you will quickly feel the effect of high humidity in the limited space of the house.
Water cooler in the structure of evaporative cooling
What is clear is that the basis of cooling in a water cooler is based on the principles of evaporative cooling. But the same evaporative cooling is provided in various types. Methods such as: direct, indirect, mixed or spontaneous evaporative cooling.
Direct evaporative cooling is a method in which the amount of water in the already cooled air is increased. But in the indirect method, by keeping the humidity level in the air constant, evaporation takes place inside a heat exchanger. With a little thought in the two mentioned methods, it is easy to understand which water cooler with which structure is suitable for use in which environment. The direct method, in which the air humidity will be increased, is a suitable method for low humidity environments. For example, in hot and dry environments, a water cooler can provide sufficient humidity in addition to providing cool air with a direct method. Buying a water cooler that works with a direct method structure is recommended for low humidity environments. That is, these simple coolers that most of us use on the roof of our houses.
Now, if you assume that the evaporation inside the water cooler takes place naturally and completely spontaneously, this becomes spontaneous evaporative cooling, which often cannot expect the necessary efficiency and effectiveness from this method. But what we see in almost all water coolers is the mixed evaporative cooling method. That is, the method in which evaporation takes place with the help of mechanical devices. It means the same water pump and motor that is installed inside the water cooler.
What is certain is that in the mixed state, energy will be spent to increase the level of evaporation. Basically, if this method is to be cost-effective, it should be able to justify the amount of air conditioning it will produce against the amount of energy consumed. It means the overall efficiency of the device. In general, this efficiency is much more favorable than it should discourage us from using this method. But the same high efficiency can be produced at different levels. When buying a water cooler, attention to efficiency can be very effective in improving the cooling operation of the home space, along with the side costs and ease of maintenance.
